The Gender and Development Office (GAD) of Calamba in collaboration with Information, Investment Promotions and Employment Services Office (IIPESO) and Communications Operations Group of Mayor’s Office invited various groups from local media practitioners, NGOs, and representatives from the academic sector to participate in the creation of the Local Media Board (LMB) last November 20, 2024, at Monte Vista Resort, Brgy. Pansol, Calamba City.

Ms. Jasmin P. Siman, GAD Supervising Administrative Officer, led the proceedings with a Gender Sensitivity Training session. She underlined the importance of the LMB in meeting key legal mandates like Republic Act 9710, and the Magna Carta of Women. Specifically, Section 19(E) of this law tasks Local Government Units (LGUs) with forming Local Media Boards to enforce gender-responsive practices in media and ensure the non-discriminatory portrayal of women. She also referenced Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) 2013-01, which requires LGUs to create such boards for monitoring and compliance with gender-related regulations.

Ms. Siman emphasized that this initiative has the full support of its Chairperson, Mayor Roseller H. Rizal in implementing gender-sensitive policies and practices in Calamba. The LMB will serve as a mechanism for embedding inclusive and equitable perspectives in local media, addressing derogatory or discriminatory portrayals, and fostering a culture of respect and diversity.

Participants of the event collaborated on the initial framework and structure for the board, marking an essential milestone toward cultivating more inclusive media practices in Calamba. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to gender equality and respectful representation in the media landscape.
